In a renewed push to accelerate metro connectivity, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has directed the MMRDA to commission Metro Line-9 (Dahisar–Mira Bhayandar) by December 15, 2025, and open the priority section of Metro Line-4 (Cadbury Junction–Gaimukh, Thane) by December 31, 2025.

The directive followed a high-level review with MMRDA officials, during which the minister emphasized timely completion, safety certification, and beautification of spaces beneath metro viaducts to create landscaped public zones and parking areas. These interventions, as reported by The Times of India, Mid-Day, and Free Press Journal, aim to improve both commuter convenience and Thane’s urban landscape.

Key Updates

  • Metro Line-4 (Wadala–Kasarvadavli): The Cadbury Junction–Gaimukh stretch in Thane is expected to be the first operational phase by December 2025. The remaining corridor, from Wadala Depot to Cadbury Junction, will open in later stages through 2026, following safety trials and CMRS (Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety) certification.
  • Metro Line-9 (Dahisar–Mira Bhayandar): Civil works are nearing completion, with system integration and trial runs in progress.
  • Urban Activation: The MMRDA has been instructed to convert under-viaduct areas into gardens, walkways, kiosks, and community spaces, which will be maintained through public-private partnerships and the sale of advertising rights.

Impact on Thane

This marks a transformational milestone for Thane’s transport network. The December rollout will connect key Thane neighbourhoods and upcoming metro stations, including Cadbury Junction, Majiwada, Kapurbawdi, Manpada, Patlipada, Waghbil, Kavesar, Brahmand, Gaimukh, Owale, and Kasarvadavli, significantly reducing travel time to Mumbai and integrating seamlessly with future Metro Lines 2 and 3.

Once fully operational, Metro Line-4 will link Thane directly to BKC, the Airport, and South Mumbai, setting a new benchmark for east-west connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. For homebuyers and investors, the corridor is expected to enhance property-value growth along Ghodbunder Road and its adjoining catchments. Properties in these areas could experience a notable appreciation in value, making them a lucrative long-term investment opportunity.
