The Thane Coastal Road Project is set to become one of the most impactful infrastructure upgrades for Thane. By directly linking the Thane–Nashik Expressway to Gaimukh on Ghodbunder Road, this six-lane corridor will ease congestion, divert heavy traffic, and enhance real estate growth across the region.

What is the Thane Coastal Road Project?

The project will create a 13.5 km, six-lane road connecting the Thane–Nashik Expressway (near Kharegaon entry) to Gaimukh on Ghodbunder Road.

It is being executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) at an estimated cost of about ₹3,364 crore. Importantly, the construction contract for the Balkum–Gaimukh stretch has been awarded to Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd, confirming that the project has now moved from planning to execution.

As per government announcements, the project is targeted for completion by May 2028.

Why is the Thane Coastal Road Important?

  • Decongestion of Ghodbunder Road: Heavy trucks and trailers travelling between Gujarat, Nashik, Bhiwandi, and JNPT currently use Ghodbunder Road. The new coastal road will divert this traffic, leaving Ghodbunder smoother and safer for commuters. • Better Connectivity: By directly linking the Thane–Nashik Expressway with Ghodbunder Road, the project will save significant travel time and reduce pressure on Thane city roads.
  • Safer and Cleaner Roads: Separating trailers and trucks from city commuters will improve safety and reduce emissions.

Current Status of the Thane Coastal Road Project

  • Clearances: The project has already received CRZ (coastal regulation zone) clearance, and forest clearance applications are in process.
  • Contract Awarded: Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd has been appointed as the contractor for the 13.45 km stretch.
  • Land Acquisition: A large portion of the required land has already been secured.

How It Fits into the Bigger Transport Network

The Thane Coastal Road will not function in isolation. It will work in tandem with:

  • The Eastern Freeway Extension, creating a signal-free Mumbai–Thane corridor (read more in our upcoming feature on Eastern Freeway & Thane Integration).
  • Upcoming creek bridges and tunnels like the Gaimukh–Bhayander link and Kasarvadavali–Kharbao bridge.

Together, these projects will reshape how Thane connects to Mumbai and the wider MMR.

Impact on Thane Real Estate

Infrastructure drives real estate growth, and this project is no exception:

  • Residential Impact: Areas such as Balkum, Kolshet, Kasarvadavali, Bhayanderpada, and Gaimukh will benefit from smoother connectivity and reduced heavy traffic.
  • Commercial Impact: With trucks diverted off Ghodbunder Road, Thane becomes more livable — boosting long-term residential and commercial demand.

Final Word

The Thane Coastal Road Project is more than just a bypass. By 2028, it is expected to transform traffic patterns and real estate growth across Thane. With Navayuga Engineering onboard as the contractor and MMRDA driving execution, this project is a major step towards a cleaner, safer, and better-connected city.
