The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has demonstrated its commitment to upholding the law by intensifying its anti-encroachment drive across the city, targeting illegal and unauthorised constructions. Civic officials confirmed that since June, 198 unauthorised structures have been demolished and extensions from 66 others removed. In total, action has been taken against 264 structures, and 50 FIRs have been filed against violators, highlighting the thoroughness of the TMC’s actions.

What Prompted the Crackdown

The action follows strict directions from the Bombay High Court, which in multiple recent orders:

  • Upheld TMC demolition notices against shops and termed them “rank illegal,” emphasising that wholesale illegal constructions cannot be regularised.
  • Directed TMC to disconnect water and electricity to three illegal buildings within a week, followed by demolition.

These judicial directions have compelled the corporation to accelerate enforcement, ensuring no delay or backdoor regularisation.

Enforcement on the Ground

  • Demolitions: 198 structures razed; 66 extensions removed.
  • Legal action: 50 FIRs lodged against developers and occupants of unauthorised premises.
  • Hotspots: Drives focused on the Diva, Mumbra, and Shil belts, where clusters of legacy violations had been flagged in civic records.

Implications for Citizens & Real Estate

  • For buyers: This highlights the importance of verifying Commencement Certificates (CC), sanctioned plans, and MahaRERA registrations before purchase.
  • For developers: The FIRs signal that civic bodies will increasingly pursue accountability, not just demolition.
  • For Thane: The move may clean up the city’s real estate image, but short-term disruptions (access, utilities, debris management) are expected in affected wards.
