A New Chapter Beneath Thane’s Flyovers
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is quietly reimagining the city’s under-flyover spaces.
According to multiple civic updates and reports, TMC has launched an “Under-Flyover Beautification and Sports Activation” drive to convert previously unused pockets beneath major flyovers — including Cadbury Junction, Teen Hath Naka, Nitin Company Junction, and Majiwada (Golden Dyes) — into mini public recreation zones.
Cadbury Junction: Next in Line
As reported by The Times of India (October 2025), a compact sports arena is planned under the Cadbury Junction flyover, featuring mini tennis and badminton courts, LED lighting, fencing, and seating.
While the ₹50 lakh project cost cited in the media has yet to appear in an official TMC document, the concept aligns with the corporation’s broader beautification framework already in place at other junctions.
Why It Matters
Projects like these, though seemingly small, are of immense value to the community, significantly enhancing the city’s lived experience.
Well-lit, well-maintained recreation pockets deter encroachments, promote safe night-time use, and add genuine value to nearby residential corridors such as Kopri, Panch Pakhadi, and the Eastern Express Highway belt.
For homebuyers and tenants, these are the quiet signals of a maturing city — where quality of life joins infrastructure as a key value driver.
The Official Picture
TMC’s Public Works Department (Zone 1) has already listed under-flyover utilization in its 2024–25 agenda, and further tenders or approvals are expected to surface in upcoming Standing Committee minutes.
Once released, TREN will update this post with direct links to the official documents.
Urban Design Lesson
From Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon stream revival to Singapore’s under-viaduct parks, the world’s densest cities have learned that every square metre counts.
Thane’s policy to repurpose flyover undercrofts for community sport is part of that same modern playbook — modest in scale but immense in symbolism.
