A Focused Repair, Not a Mega-Widening Promise
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has floated a tender for critical resurfacing and repair work on a roughly 700-metre stretch of Ghodbunder Road, between Gaimukh Jakat Naka and the Gaimukh Police Chowky — a segment long criticised for potholes, poor drainage, and uneven gradients.
The bidding deadline is October 31, 2025, and, according to civic timelines, work is expected to begin on November 10, pending final clearance from the Thane Traffic Police. Repairs will be carried out lane-wise to maintain traffic movement and are expected to conclude within 7–10 days, weather permitting.
This portion lies under TMC’s jurisdiction, connecting the Majiwada–Gaimukh corridor, while the adjoining section toward NH-48 falls under Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), which completed resurfacing on its side earlier this month.
Why These Works Matter
The Gaimukh ghat gradient — one of Thane’s busiest links between Ghodbunder Road and Borivali — has endured years of patch-on-patch asphalt, resulting in poor surface quality and waterlogging. Following multiple citizen petitions and site reviews, TMC opted for a proper resurfacing programme rather than more temporary patch repairs.
However, officials have clarified that this is not a full-scale concretisation. Any future rebuild will fall under the MMRDA’s separate service-road integration plan, expected to progress in phases through 2026.

Don’t Confuse It with MMRDA’s Broader Projects
In parallel, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) continues its long-term initiative to merge and concretise service roads between Kapurbawdi and Gaimukh — a larger, multi-kilometre corridor upgrade aimed at drainage improvement, lane uniformity, and safety.
Reports of a 14-lane expansion relate to future conceptual studies, not this November tender. The TMC repair is a short-term maintenance intervention, not a structural widening project.
What Residents Can Expect
- Traffic: Intermittent single-lane closures near Gaimukh, with diversions managed by Thane Traffic Police.
- Noise & dust: Moderate; milling and overlay work will generate limited disturbance.
- Completion: If conditions remain dry, the stretch should reopen fully by mid-November 2025.
Societies across Waghbil, Kasarvadavli, and Gaimukh should plan commute adjustments and school-bus buffers. Internal routes via Kolshet, Brahmand, and Hiranandani Estate can temporarily ease congestion.

Though modest in scope, this targeted upgrade contributes to Thane’s liveability index. The Gaimukh–Kasarvadavli–Waghbil belt benefits from sustained civic attention — something homebuyers increasingly equate with infrastructure reliability and asset safety.
Rather than framing this as an instant price trigger, consultants and residents should view it as a continuity signal — proof that everyday maintenance is keeping pace with Thane’s expanding infrastructure network.
The Road Ahead
Key next steps include the TMC work-order issuance and detailed traffic-management circular.
Meanwhile, MMRDA’s larger ₹ 40 crore service-road concretisation package is expected to mobilise before year-end, aiming for smoother carriageway continuity by early 2026.
If both agencies maintain timelines, the Ghodbunder corridor could soon offer a consistent surface from Kapurbawdi to Gaimukh — a quiet but meaningful boost to Thane’s daily mobility ecosystem.
