Ghodbunder Road, the arterial lifeline connecting Thane to Mumbai’s western suburbs, has long suffered from congestion due to heavy vehicular movement and overlapping infrastructure projects.

On 26 September 2025, Thane District Collector Shrikrishna Panchal confirmed that the Thane administration, responsible for local governance, will work directly with MMRDA, the planning authority for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, to expedite congestion relief measures.

Key Action Points

  • Repair and restore service roads to divert local traffic.
  • Restrict heavy vehicles on sensitive stretches.
  • Consider height barriers to control misuse of roads.
  • Synchronize Metro, road widening, and utility works to avoid conflicts.

Why It Matters

  • Residential Impact: Reduced congestion will make Ghodbunder townships more attractive.
  • Commercial Leasing: Offices and retail along the belt will benefit from smoother commutes.
  • Public Confidence: The success of this coordination will be judged by visible on-ground results.

The Road Ahead

While this step is a welcome sign of coordination, effective execution is crucial. Previous plans, such as the Gaimukh–Bhayandar tunnel and the ₹600 crore widening project, remain in the pipeline. However, short-term fixes can provide immediate relief if implemented effectively. This underscores the need for accountability and sustained follow-up.
