A new cross-creek link taking shape on Thane’s western edge
Thane’s western corridor is witnessing another significant infrastructure milestone.
The Gaimukh–Paye Gaon Creek Bridge, a 6.509 km connector between Ghodbunder Road (Gaimukh) and the Chinchoti–Anjurphata Road via Paye Gaon (Bhiwandi taluka), is under construction.
Sanctioned by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and awarded to Ashoka Buildcon Ltd. for ₹ 975.58 crore, the bridge is part of MMRDA’s programme to ease Ghodbunder Road congestion and establish a direct freight corridor linking Thane, Bhiwandi, and the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Highway (NH-48).

Why this bridge matters
For years, Ghodbunder Road has carried the full load of east–west traffic linking Thane, Mira Road, Borivali, Vasai–Virar, and Bhiwandi, as well as long-distance freight bound for Palghar, Vapi, and the Gujarat–Ahmedabad Highway corridor (NH-48).
This constant mix of regional and industrial traffic funnels through the Gaimukh–Kasarvadavali stretch, creating chronic congestion that spills into residential pockets of Thane West.
The new bridge will create a direct connection from Ghodbunder Road to the Chinchoti–Anjurphata corridor through Paye Gaon, providing a shorter and faster link between the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor (NH-48) and the Thane–Bhiwandi–Nashik Highway (old NH-3 / new NH-160).
It is engineered to:
- Decongest Ghodbunder Road with a parallel cross-creek route for long-haul and heavy vehicles.
- Streamline freight movement from NH-48 to Bhiwandi and Anjurphata’s industrial belt, bypassing inner Thane.
- Form a continuous logistics corridor linking NH-48 → Ghodbunder → Paye Gaon → Anjurphata → NH-160, enhancing connectivity toward MTHL and JNPT.
- Improve monsoon resilience by adding an alternate engineered crossing when Ghodbunder faces flooding or slope erosion.
- Open new growth pockets around Gaimukh, Kasarvadavali, Kalher, and Paye Gaon, accelerating residential and industrial expansion.
Current on-ground progress
After MMRDA awarded the contract in September 2024, Ashoka Buildcon began site mobilisation in early 2025.
Work is visible along the Gaimukh creek stretch, where equipment movement and initial piling and approach-road works have started.
MMRDA has not yet released official progress data, but the approved 42-month timeline suggests a likely 2027–28 completion, subject to CRZ and forest permissions.
Regional and economic impact
- Faster cross-regional movement — smoother commutes and shorter truck cycles between Thane, Bhiwandi and the western suburbs.
- Lower logistics costs — direct NH-48 ↔ Bhiwandi connectivity reduces fuel use and travel time for freight operators.
- Growth for emerging micro-markets — better access strengthens developer viability and land values across Gaimukh, Kasarvadavali, Kalher and Paye Gaon.
- Part of a larger network — along with the Kolshet–Kalher and Kasarvadavli–Kharbao bridges, this link helps complete a continuous cross-creek grid for western Thane.
What to watch in 2026
- Expansion of piling and pier work across the creek.
- Approach-road tie-ins and possible traffic diversions near Gaimukh Ghat.
- MMRDA progress reports confirming span launches and structure counts.
- Land-handover and environmental clearance milestones on the Paye Gaon side.
Thane’s next leap is infrastructure-led
From the Internal Ring Metro and Borivali–Thane Twin Tunnel to new creek crossings, Thane’s infrastructure map is evolving fast.
The Gaimukh–Paye Gaon Bridge adds a vital link between Ghodbunder and Anjurphata, connecting Mumbai’s western express corridor to Thane’s industrial east.
Each project of this scale reduces travel friction, improves regional efficiency, and steadily raises Thane’s long-term liveability and investment appeal.
In short, real infrastructure defines real value.
