Thane’s upcoming Bullet Train station at Mhatardi is gradually taking shape as more than a High-Speed Rail stop.
New transport proposals now point towards a wider network around the station — one that could eventually connect central Thane by Metro, link the Dombivli side with Metro Line 12 and Navi Mumbai, and introduce passenger water transport through the Ulhas River and Thane Creek system.
The road connectivity around the station has already been examined separately by TREN through the Mumbai–Nashik Highway, TDLR, Kalyan Ring Road, Bhopar and the station-area road network.
The next layer is public transport.
A new Metro corridor between Thane and the Diva–Dombivli belt has entered the planning and DPR stage, with the proposed alignment expected to serve the Thane Bullet Train station at Mhatardi.
Alongside this, Thane Municipal Corporation has already included waterways and a jetty within its larger multimodal vision for the High-Speed Rail station.
Maharashtra’s passenger-water programme is also progressing separately around Gaimukh, Kolshet, Kalher and Dombivli.
The individual projects are at different stages, but together they offer a clearer picture of how Mhatardi could eventually fit into the transport network of Thane and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
A Metro Link From Thane to Mhatardi Is Under Study
In August 2026, the Maharashtra government gave in-principle approval to take forward planning for a Metro corridor linking Thane with Kalwa, Mumbra and the Diva–Dombivli side.
A feasibility study and Detailed Project Report are now being prepared.
The corridor currently under examination is approximately 9.6 km long, with around seven to eight stations under consideration.
The broad alignment being studied runs through:
Thane → Kalwa → Mumbra → Diva / Mhatardi → Dombivli / Kopar side
Preliminary planning envisages an underground section from the Thane side towards Mumbra, with an elevated section further towards Diva and Dombivli.
The alignment remains preliminary. The DPR will determine the final route, station locations, interchange points, engineering design, land requirements, project cost and implementation schedule.
Among the most significant elements of the proposal is its planned integration with Thane Bullet Train Station at Mhatardi.
A Direct Public-Transport Link From Central Thane
Mhatardi lies away from Thane’s traditional railway and commercial centre, which has been one of the recurring questions around the location of the High-Speed Rail station.
The proposed Metro offers one possible answer.
A passenger travelling from central Thane could eventually have a route broadly along:
Thane → Kalwa → Mumbra → Thane Bullet Train Station
At the Thane end, the corridor would enter one of the busiest suburban railway hubs in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and could also form part of the city’s expanding Metro network.
For HSR passengers, this would reduce dependence on cars and taxis for the journey between central Thane and Mhatardi.
The proposed connection would also bring the Bullet Train station into Thane’s established mass-transit system rather than leaving it dependent primarily on road access.
The Dombivli Side Opens a Route Towards Navi Mumbai
The proposed Metro is also being planned for integration with Metro Line 12, the Kalyan–Taloja corridor, on the Dombivli side.
The exact interchange point remains subject to the DPR and should not yet be treated as final.
Metro Line 12 itself is already under construction.
The current MMRDA configuration provides for an approximately 23.57-km fully elevated corridor with 19 stations, connecting the Kalyan–Dombivli belt with Taloja and Amandoot.
At Amandoot, Metro Line 12 is planned to interchange with Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1.
If the proposed links are implemented, the wider network could allow a passenger journey broadly along:
Thane → Thane Bullet Train Station → Dombivli-side interchange → Metro Line 12 → Taloja / Amandoot → Navi Mumbai Metro network
The journey would involve interchanges rather than necessarily operating as a single direct Metro service.
Even so, it would place the Thane HSR station within a much larger public-transport network stretching from central Thane towards Dombivli, Taloja and Navi Mumbai.
The Multimodal Plan Predates the Latest Metro Proposal
The effort to integrate the High-Speed Rail station with other transport systems began before the latest Metro proposal.
Government discussions during 2025 examined connections between the Mhatardi HSR station, Thane Railway Station, Kopar and the Metro network towards Taloja.
By September 2025, Thane Municipal Corporation was publicly presenting the station as a future multimodal transport hub.
The transport systems discussed for integration included High-Speed Rail, conventional railway, Metro, buses, road transport and waterways through a jetty.
The reference to a jetty is particularly notable because Maharashtra is simultaneously developing a much larger passenger-water network across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Passenger Water Transport Is Developing Around Thane
The Maharashtra Maritime Board’s current passenger-water programme envisages 10 routes, 75 eco-friendly passenger boats and 29 modern jetty terminals across MMR.
A Detailed Project Report is being prepared for the larger network.
Several of the routes pass through locations directly relevant to Thane.
One planned corridor runs broadly along:
Vasai → Mira-Bhayander → Fountain Junction → Gaimukh → Nagale → Kalher
For residents along Ghodbunder Road, Gaimukh would provide access to the proposed water network from the northern side of Thane.
Another route is planned between:
Kalyan → Mumbra → Kalher → Kolshet
Kolshet therefore emerges as an important waterfront node on the Thane side.
A further proposed connection runs:
Kalher → Mulund → Airoli → Vashi → Navi Mumbai International Airport
Taken together, the routes show that passenger-water planning is no longer limited to short local ferry services. The network is being examined as a regional transport system linking parts of Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Navi Mumbai.
Kolshet, Kalher and Dombivli Are Already Part of the Jetty Programme
Several jetty projects within this network have progressed beyond the initial conceptual stage.
Jetty infrastructure at Kolshet, Kalher and Dombivli forms part of the National Waterway-53 and wider passenger-water development programme.
Kolshet is particularly relevant to western Thane and the Ghodbunder Road catchment.
Kalher occupies a central position within the Thane–Bhiwandi creek system and appears across several proposed water routes.
Dombivli provides an eastern node within the same wider waterway network.
These projects do not by themselves establish a direct ferry route to the Bullet Train station, but they create the infrastructure from which a larger passenger-water network can be built.
Gaimukh and the Ghodbunder Road Catchment
Gaimukh has appeared in Thane’s water-transport planning for several years and continues to feature in the current passenger-water network.
Its location at the northern end of Ghodbunder Road makes it a natural terminal for the large residential catchment stretching through Kasarvadavali, Waghbil, Hiranandani Estate and adjoining neighbourhoods.
There is, however, no current government document identified by TREN that names a separate terminal as “Hiranandani Estate Jetty.”
The more accurate interpretation at present is that Gaimukh and Kolshet could serve different parts of the wider Ghodbunder Road and Thane waterfront belt, depending on how the final routes and feeder systems are organised.
Dombivli Is Becoming a Meeting Point for Several Transport Projects
The Dombivli side is emerging repeatedly across different infrastructure plans.
TDLR already connects Mankoli with Motagaon.
Dombivli has an established suburban railway network.
Passenger-water infrastructure is developing in the area.
The proposed Thane–Mhatardi Metro would extend towards the Dombivli side, while Metro Line 12 is under construction towards Kalyan, Taloja and Navi Mumbai.
These projects will not necessarily converge at one station or terminal, but their geographic overlap is notable.
Over time, parts of the wider Dombivli belt could have access to road, suburban railway, Metro and passenger-water transport within the same broader urban corridor.
The Ulhas River Gives the HSR Station Another Transport Advantage
Thane Bullet Train Station is being developed close to the Ulhas River.
Its riverside location is already reflected in the design of the station entrance, which takes inspiration from waves.
The Ulhas River and adjoining Thane Creek system are also part of the broader passenger-water geography being developed around Thane.
A water interchange serving the HSR station therefore fits naturally within the physical setting of the project.
TMC has already placed a jetty within its publicly stated multimodal vision for the station.
The remaining details are still awaited.
No final public plan reviewed by TREN currently identifies the precise HSR-side jetty location, its terminal design or the passenger routes that would operate from it.
A Direct Gaimukh or Kolshet Service to the HSR Station Is Not Yet Announced
The larger planning picture is established.
Gaimukh and Kolshet are part of Maharashtra’s passenger-water plans.
Kolshet, Kalher and Dombivli have jetty infrastructure under development.
Thane Bullet Train Station sits beside the Ulhas River.
TMC has publicly included waterways and a jetty in the station’s multimodal concept.
What has not yet been published is a final ferry route directly connecting Gaimukh or Kolshet with the HSR station.
There is also no publicly available final information yet on the exact HSR jetty location, passenger terminal arrangement, vessels, operating frequency, fares or journey times.
Until those plans are released, the waterway should be viewed as an officially envisaged part of the multimodal hub whose operating network is still being worked out.
How the Network Could Eventually Come Together
From central Thane, the proposed Metro could provide a route broadly along:
Thane → Kalwa → Mumbra → Thane Bullet Train Station
From the eastern side, the network could connect towards:
Thane Bullet Train Station → Dombivli-side interchange → Metro Line 12 → Taloja / Amandoot → Navi Mumbai Metro
From Thane’s waterfront, a future passenger-water connection could potentially operate through:
Gaimukh / Kolshet water network → HSR-side jetty or feeder connection → Thane Bullet Train Station
The first Metro corridor remains at the DPR stage, while the exact passenger-water link to the HSR station is yet to be publicly defined.

Thane Bullet Train Station Is Gradually Becoming Part of a Larger Network
Mhatardi can appear distant when viewed against Thane’s transport network today.
That view changes when the infrastructure now being planned around the station is considered together.
The road network is expanding through the Mumbai–Nashik Highway, TDLR, Kalyan Ring Road and station-area planning.
A proposed Metro could connect the station directly with central Thane.
Metro Line 12 could extend that public-transport network towards Dombivli, Taloja and Navi Mumbai.
Passenger-water infrastructure is developing around Gaimukh, Kolshet, Kalher and Dombivli, while TMC has already included a jetty in its vision for the HSR hub.
Not all of these connections are operational, and several are still at the DPR or planning stage.
But the direction is increasingly visible.
Thane Bullet Train Station is being conceived as a regional transport interchange rather than a standalone High-Speed Rail stop near Diva.
For Thane’s property market, the eventual integration of these networks could have implications well beyond Mhatardi itself.
Ghodbunder Road, central Thane, Dombivli, Bhiwandi and parts of Navi Mumbai could all gain different forms of access to the station if the planned transport links progress.
The real picture will become clearer as the Metro DPR, station-area plans, Maritime Board passenger-water DPR and individual jetty projects move forward.
TREN will continue to track those developments as official alignments, tenders and implementation plans are released.
Project status and planning information reviewed up to 28 August 2026. Proposed Metro alignments, interchange locations, passenger-water routes, jetty locations and implementation schedules remain subject to DPRs, statutory approvals and subsequent government decisions.
