Mumbai’s long-awaited Mira–Bhayandar Metro is nearing operational readiness. Authorities expect the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 9 to begin passenger services in February, subject to final statutory clearances and commissioning approvals.

This update follows recent public statements by Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who indicated that the corridor could start operations “next month.” In parallel, independent reporting suggests that the initial stretch has moved into final readiness stages. These include system integration, trial runs, and safety certification.

What Is Expected to Open First on Metro Line 9

The proposed February launch applies to the first operational phase of Mumbai Metro Line 9. This phase covers the elevated stretch from Dahisar East to Kashigaon in the Mira Road belt.

Authorities prioritised this section for early commissioning. Meanwhile, work on the remaining portions towards Bhayandar continues through execution and approval stages.

Such phased rollouts follow established practice across Mumbai’s metro network. This approach allows commuter services to begin once essential operational benchmarks are met, rather than waiting for full corridor completion.

Mumbai Metro Line 9 in the Wider Network Context

Mumbai Metro Line 9 will extend the city’s metro network northwards into the Mira–Bhayandar region. From a planning perspective, the corridor functions as a suburban feeder anchored at Dahisar.

As a result, commuters gain structured access to Mumbai’s larger mass transit system. Over time, this integration should reduce dependence on road travel, especially during peak hours when western suburban corridors face persistent congestion.

Even in its initial phase, the Dahisar East–Kashigaon link introduces a rail-based option that improves commute reliability for Mira Road residents.

Importantly, Dahisar East enables seamless interchange with Mumbai Metro Line 7. This connection offers direct metro access towards Andheri and major employment zones along the Western Express Highway.

Although full travel-time gains will emerge after the entire corridor opens, the first phase helps commuters adapt to the service. It also allows operators to stabilise schedules, ridership patterns, and daily operations.

Alongside the metro update, the state government has reiterated plans for large-scale road concretisation across Mira–Bhayandar over the next 18 to 24 months.
