A 32 km corridor moves into its final phase

According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), construction of Metro Line 4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavali) has now advanced beyond 84 percent, marking one of the most significant milestones in the city’s ongoing metro expansion.

A new 56-metre steel span, weighing more than 450 tonnes, was successfully installed above the Pant Nagar bus depot in Ghatkopar (East) this week. The span, a critical link between Pier P280 and P281, required night-time traffic blocks and dual-crane lifting. MMRDA officials confirmed the structure was pre-assembled on-site over the past month to minimise disruption.

The corridor—spanning 32.32 km with 30 stations—connects Wadala, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Thane and Kasarvadavali, serving as a high-capacity east-west connector and feeder route to Metro Line 5 (Thane – Bhiwandi – Kalyan).

Engineering milestones

MMRDA also confirmed that another major span — a 48-metre, 325-tonne steel segment — was installed earlier this year at Kapur Bawdi Junction on Ghodbunder Road, completing all special steel spans along the Thane stretch between Majiwada and Kasarvadavali.

As of November 2025, civil packages covering the entire alignment are in advanced stages of pier, girder, and deck installation, with system integration and station fit-outs underway.

What this means for Thane’s real-estate corridor

For Thane and Ghodbunder Road micro-markets, Metro Line 4 is expected to be transformational. It will connect major residential zones such as Balkum, Patlipada and Kasarvadavali to employment hubs in the eastern suburbs, cutting travel time to Ghatkopar and Wadala by up to 40 percent.

For buyers and investors, it signals the next phase of infrastructure development following the widening of Ghodbunder Road and the redevelopment of Kapur Bawdi Junction. Developers in the region are already factoring in station adjacency and reduced commute time as key value drivers for mid-to-premium housing and villa segments.

What’s next

With 84 percent civil progress achieved, the remaining work includes systems integration, station finishes, electromechanical installations and trial runs. A phased commissioning of Line 4 and its extension, Line 4A (Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh), is expected post-2026 subject to testing and safety approvals.

In parallel, MMRDA has allocated over ₹12,000 crore for ongoing metro projects across the region to fast-track connectivity under the city’s “Grid 2026” plan.
