The city’s most-awaited loop project gathers pace

Thane’s most ambitious infrastructure project — the Internal Ring Metro — is quietly shifting gears.
The 29-kilometre circular corridor, approved by the Union Cabinet on August 16, 2024, with a sanctioned cost of ₹12,200 crore, is now in its active tendering phase.

Designed to connect the city’s key residential and business zones through 22 stations, the Ring Metro will loop through Wagle Estate, Teen Hath Naka, Rabodi, Kolshet, Balkum, Patlipada, and Kasarvadavali, linking directly with Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 5 to create an integrated intra-Thane transport network.

Verified: Execution and current status

According to the Press Information Bureau (PR ID 2046082) and the official Detailed Project Report (DPR), the project will be executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) — the same agency behind the Pune and Nagpur metros.

Current milestones:

  • Project cost: ₹12,200 crore (Cabinet-approved)
  • Total length: 29 km | Stations: 22 (20 elevated + 2 underground)
  • Execution agency: Maha-Metro
  • General Consultant: AECOM – Egis – Doyen JV (awarded May 2025)
  • Design Consultant: STUP Consultants (awarded September 2024)
  • Civil Package T1-015/C-01/2025: 20.5 km elevated viaduct + 3 special spans — bids open
  • Electrical Package T1-016/ELE-01/2025: EHV Overhead Works — bid deadline November 27, 2025

While some local reports suggest that civil work could begin by November 2025, no such order has been officially issued.
A detailed review of the Maha-Metro Thane Metro Tender Portal shows that all major packages are still listed as “Inviting Tenders.”
As of October 30, 2025, no publicly accessible Letter of Award (LOA) has been uploaded for any civil works contract.
TREN cross-checked the state e-tender bulletins, the project portal, and government press releases but could not access any officially published LOA document confirming mobilisation.

Why this matters

For Thane’s urban economy, the Ring Metro isn’t just transport — it’s transformation.
By connecting residential corridors with job centres, the line could cut intra-city travel time by nearly 40 percent and open new Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) clusters around the Kolshet–Balkum and Wagle Estate belts.

Together with the Ghodbunder Road upgrade, the Thane–Borivali twin tunnel, and the Coastal Road extension, the Ring Metro completes the city’s “Mobility Triangle” — making Thane one of the most connected and investment-ready hubs in the MMR by 2030.
