The visionary real estate developer Niranjan Hiranandani has articulated a bold vision for Mumbai’s future, suggesting that the city can eliminate all its slums through sustained infrastructure expansion and planned housing redevelopment.
In an interview with ANI on October 8, 2025, he stated, “Housing for all as an objective — we can achieve. We can eliminate all the slums in Mumbai.”
He credited Maharashtra’s metro expansion, new airports, and expressway connectivity for creating the foundation of a slum-free city.
Linking Infrastructure and Housing
Hiranandani emphasized the transformative power of infrastructure, describing it as the driving force behind urban transformation. He pointed to projects such as the Navi Mumbai International Airport, the expanding metro network, and new expressways as key enablers in the city’s journey towards replacing informal settlements with regulated, affordable housing.
Policy Alignment and Redevelopment Outlook
The state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has expedited approvals under the SRA and UDCPR 2020, including the Mumbai Slum Cluster Redevelopment Scheme and the Kisan Nagar cluster plan in Thane.
These initiatives are not isolated but part of a larger, national strategy. They align with central programmes such as Project-SMART (GoI–JICA), which integrates transport and housing around major transit hubs, providing a comprehensive approach to urban development.
For Thane, these policies align with the rollout of Metro Line 4, the Ghodbunder Road widening, and the Thane–NMIA Elevated Road, reinforcing its role as a model for sustainable redevelopment within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
