In a move that could significantly improve Thane’s connectivity to the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) corridor, a proposal to link Thane, Kopar, and Belapur with the upcoming Mhatardi (Diva Gaon) Bullet Train Station has been discussed at a recent high-level coordination meeting, according to a report in Maharashtra Times (7 October 2025).

The meeting, attended by senior officials from the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL), the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and the Thane District Administration, explored options for developing a multi-modal transport corridor that would allow passengers to move seamlessly between high-speed rail, suburban trains, and metro lines.

Multi-Modal Integration Vision

Under the concept, the proposed corridor would connect:

  • Mhatardi Bullet Train Station (HSR) — the designated terminal for Thane district;
  • Thane Station — a central hub for suburban and metro lines;
  • Kopar Junction — the interchange between the Central and Western suburban networks; and
  • CBD Belapur — Navi Mumbai’s administrative and business district.

While details remain at the planning stage, officials noted that such a system would complement the ongoing Project-SMART initiative, a Government of India–JICA collaboration focused on station-area development and transit-oriented planning around the Thane HSR node. This initiative sets the groundwork for the proposed corridor and ensures alignment with the region’s larger development plans.

Strategic Significance for Thane and MMR

If implemented, this corridor would not only make Thane one of the best-connected nodes within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) but also significantly enhance the region’s overall connectivity. It would link suburban, metro, and high-speed networks into a single mobility ecosystem, underscoring the project’s strategic value.

For commuters, the corridor promises to reduce transfer times between Thane, Belapur, and the HSR terminal. It also reinforces Thane’s growing role as a gateway junction between Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and central India, enabling a more efficient and seamless travel experience.

Urban planners expect that such integration could drive renewed development interest in Majiwada, Diva, Dombivli, Airoli, and Belapur, where infrastructure upgrades and transit-oriented zoning are already reshaping property demand. This may lead to a rise in property values across these micro-markets, strengthening their long-term investment appeal.

This proposed corridor complements the city’s broader multimodal vision under the Project-SMART framework.
