In a landmark infrastructure decision, the Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the construction of a 25-kilometre six-lane elevated road corridor connecting Thane directly to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).
Valued at ₹6,363 crore, the project will be implemented by CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation)—a trusted government agency—under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
According to reports from Free Press Journal and Hindustan Times, the elevated road will reduce travel time between Thane and NMIA from nearly 90 minutes to 30 minutes, bypassing traffic bottlenecks on the Eastern Express Highway and Thane–Belapur Road.
Project Highlights
- Total Length: Approximately 25 km elevated corridor with six interchanges.
- Speed Design: Up to 100 km/h for high-speed commuter and logistics traffic.
- Implementing Agency: CIDCO under the PPP framework.
- Timeline: Land acquisition and environmental clearances within six months; estimated construction period of three years.
- Objective: To provide a direct, controlled-access route linking Thane to the upcoming airport corridor near Ulwe–Panvel.
Why This Matters for Thane and the Region
- Connectivity Leap: Positions Thane as a satellite airport city with seamless access to NMIA.
- Real Estate Catalyst: Improved access will enhance investment appeal for townships and commercial projects across the Ghodbunder, Airoli, and Dombivli belts.
- Traffic Relief: Diverts transit load from existing arterials such as the EEH and Thane–Belapur Road, thereby reducing urban congestion.
- Economic Multiplier: Faster airport connectivity supports industrial, warehousing, and service-sector growth across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
What Still Awaits Official Publication
Although the Cabinet has formally approved the project, the Detailed Project Report (DPR), alignment maps, and financing model have not yet been made publicly available. The PPP structure and environmental compliance details are expected to be outlined in upcoming government notifications.
