The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is embarking on a monumental infrastructure upgrade for Ghodbunder Road (SH-42), one of Thane’s most crucial arterial highways.

According to reports, Ghodbunder Road will be converted into a 14-lane concrete corridor (7 lanes on each side) as part of a ₹5,200 crore mobility package. The project also includes the development of 23 internal roads to distribute traffic and reduce the load on the main highway.

Connectivity Boost for Thane

The widening project is set to seamlessly integrate with ongoing Metro Line-4 and Line-5 works, which already intersect Ghodbunder Road, ensuring that road and rail infrastructure function in harmony. It will also complement other significant mobility projects, such as the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel and the Thane Coastal Road, both aimed at reducing congestion and opening new east-west and north-south corridors.

Why This Matters

  • Commute Efficiency: Reduced bottlenecks will save travel time for lakhs of commuters daily.
  • Real Estate Growth: Improved accessibility will enhance the appeal of residential townships and commercial clusters along Ghodbunder.
  • Urban Development: The project reinforces Thane’s position as a strategic hub within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The Road Ahead

While the project has been reported, detailed design approvals and official MMRDA notifications are awaited. Implementation will require meticulous phasing to minimize disruption, along with land acquisition, utility shifting, and environmental clearances.
