The Decision

On 17 September 2025, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved ₹931.15 crore for the construction of the 94.24-km Bhandara–Gadchiroli Super Highway, to be developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The highway will integrate directly with the Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Samruddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway).

Why It Matters

  • Connectivity boost: Expected to reduce distance by ~23 km and travel time between Bhandara, Gadchiroli, and Nagpur.
  • Part of the Samruddhi feeder network: Strengthens the state’s plan to connect interior Vidarbha with the expressway spine.
  • Economic impact: Improved freight movement, access for agri- and mineral-rich areas toward Mumbai/Thane markets and ports.

Alignment & Scope

According to official filings with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board:

  • Length: ~94.24 km (including connector)
  • Route: From Sawarkheda Interchange of Nagpur–Gondia Expressway → via Gadegaon on NH-53 → to Kinhi village on NH-353D
  • Villages / Talukas: ~68 villages in five talukas: Kuhi, Bhandara, Pauni, Lakhandur, Bramhapuri; spanning Nagpur, Bhandara, Chandrapur districts
  • Design: Four-lane, access-controlled corridor with safety features and service roads.

Current Status

  • Land acquisition: Notifications issued under the Maharashtra Highways Act by district administrations.
  • Environment / regulatory: Classified as a Category A project due to close proximity to protected forest areas. Public hearings and EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) in progress.
  • Implementation: MSRDC is executing, with tendering for initial packages already underway.

What It Means for Thane & MMR

This approval deepens Maharashtra’s infrastructure commitment. For Thane: better logistics pathways from Vidarbha will mean increased goods flow toward Mumbai/Thane, enhanced warehousing potential, and alignment with state policy favoring expressway-based growth.
